What is Math?

What is Math like in highschool? Why are there several types of Math? Is Math mandatory in highschool? What stationaries do I need for Math class? All of these questions are questions that students ask at the start of the year and in this page, it will answer all of your questions about Math at R.C. Palmer Secondary (From Grade 9-10)

What is Math like at Palmer?

Math in highschool is very different from Math in elementary since it's more difficult, more homework, and more tests. Math isn't as bad as you think it is because at R.C. Palmer, you get to do fun projects, draw graphs (fun), and do stuff like going on feild trips!

Why is Math that important?

Math is important because it helps you develop problem-solving skills, critical thinking, and logical reasoning, it may even help you in your future career.

For daily life

  • Managing finances: Math is essential for budgeting, managing bank accounts, and understanding loans and investments.

  • Everyday tasks: You use math for cooking, shopping, estimating travel time, and doing home projects like gardening or decorating.

  • Understanding patterns: It helps you make sense of the world, from recognizing patterns to comprehending data.

The Universal Language

Math is the only language shared by all humans regardless of culture, religion, or gender.

  • Global Communication: A mathematical equation means the same thing in Tokyo as it does in New York. It allows scientists and economists to collaborate globally.

  • Understanding the Universe: Physics is essentially math applied to the physical world. It explains how gravity works, how planets orbit, and how atoms interact.

  • Technological Advancement: We would not have satellites, GPS, the internet, or medical imaging (like MRI machines) without advanced calculus.

Career & Professional Success

Math is often called the "gatekeeper" subject because it opens doors to high-growth fields.

  • Foundation of STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Medicine all rely entirely on mathematics to function.

  • Data Analysis: In the modern world, "data is the new oil." Understanding statistics and probability is essential for marketing, business strategy, and politics.

  • Coding and AI: Every piece of software, from your phone's OS to Artificial Intelligence, is built on algorithms and logic derived from math.

  • Trades: Electricians, carpenters, and plumbers use trigonometry and algebra daily to ensure structures are safe and functional.

A Workout for Your Brain

Doing math makes your mind stronger, even if you don't realize it.

  • It helps you solve problems: You learn how to take a hard task and break it down into small, easy pieces.

  • It helps you think clearly: You learn to use facts and logic so you don't get tricked easily. It helps you see patterns: You train your brain to notice how things repeat, which helps you guess what happens next.

  • It teaches you to be careful: You learn to slow down and check your work, because one small mistake can change the whole answer.
